  • “With heartstrings aching for the absent boy.”

    Harriett Blanche Edwards
  • Author:
Harriett Blanche Edwards, an extract from her poem on the loss of her son, Noel Edwards, 1918.

Noel Edwards, a Bendigo engineer, was corporal in the 7th Battalion and was killed in action at Lone Pine, on 9 August 1915. The futility of his death was representative of the devastating loss of a generation, and the anguish visited on family and friends back home. Four years after the war, Noel’s mother expressed her acute grief through poetry.
